1977 Atypical Die Clash ADC-1C-1977-01
Error
Description
Remarkable for concentrating multiple die anomalies on a single coin, ADC-1c-1977-01 documents a 1977 Philadelphia Lincoln cent with significant unabraded die clash marks produced by dies that were slightly rotated approximately 5 degrees from normal alignment. An atypical die clash differs from a standard clash in that the dies contact each other at an unusual angle or under abnormal conditions, producing transferred design elements that appear in unexpected positions. The roughly 5-degree rotation means the clashed reverse design transferred onto the obverse — and vice versa — at a slight tilt from where a normal clash would place them. Beyond the clash marks, this same coin exhibits a CUD spanning the 10 to 11 o'clock position on the obverse rim, a smaller rim CUD at the 7 o'clock position, and a finned rim running from 3 to 7 o'clock — an accumulation of die failures suggesting this working die was in advanced deterioration when these coins were struck. The unabraded condition of the clash marks indicates the die was not resurfaced after the clash event. Coin courtesy of Brian Gross. Attributed by MadDieClashes.
