Die steel at the Denver Mint yielded another rim failure during 1977 nickel production, and this third documented cud for the 1977-D Jefferson Nickel preserves the evidence. Cataloged as CU-5c-1977D-03 by Cuds on Coins, the variety displays the hallmark characteristics of a cud error — a raised featureless mass at the rim where a die fragment broke away and left a cavity that filled with metal during subsequent strikes. The late 1970s represented a period of stabilization for U.S. coinage after the turbulent mid-decade adjustments to composition and mintage volumes, and Denver's nickel output reflected steady demand in everyday commerce. Felix Schlag's familiar Jefferson portrait and Monticello reverse were approaching their fortieth year of production in 1977, and the design's well-established relief was thoroughly understood by die shop personnel. Three cuds for a single Denver date is a moderate count, suggesting normal die attrition rather than any systemic production issue.
