Description

Tracked by VarietyVista under UVC-451 and DMR-007, this is an additional listing entry for the 1976-S Bicentennial half dollar DDR-001, one of the premier doubled die varieties in the Bicentennial Coins 1976 series. Cross-referenced as FS-801, this CN clad proof variety exhibits a medium spread on E PLURIBUS UNUM and the designer's initials, accompanied by lighter spread on HALF DOLLAR, AMERICA, UNITED, and the lower stars, with extra thickness appearing on the 200 YEARS OF FREEDOM legend. The variety is found in 1975 proof sets, since the United States Mint began producing 1976-dated Bicentennial coinage in 1975. Three die states have been documented: Stage A shows the reverse and obverse in early die state, Stage B at mid die state remains unconfirmed, and Stage C at late die state is likewise unconfirmed. Seth Huntington's Independence Hall reverse, used exclusively on the 1976 Bicentennial half dollar, replaced Frank Gasparro's heraldic eagle for this commemorative issue. The coin weighs 11.34 grams with a 30.6 mm diameter in its copper-nickel clad composition. The FS-801 designation from the Fivaz-Stanton Cherry Pickers' Guide marks this as a top-tier collectible variety, and it remains one of the most actively sought Bicentennial half dollar varieties among both new and experienced variety collectors.
