1976 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Designated 1976 1¢ WDDR-002 by the Wexler Team, this second doubled die reverse for the 1976 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent displays a spread towards the center along with extra thickness on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the designer's initials FG, and ONE CENT. Nice notching is visible on the upper letters of UNITED and the lower letters of AMERICA and ONE — a doubling profile that closely parallels WDDR-001. However, WDDR-002 originates from a different reverse die, as established by its distinct die marker profile. This variety shares obverse die markers with WDDR-001 — specifically, a short vertical die gouge between the centers of the N of IN and the G in GOD — indicating that the same obverse die was paired with two different reverse dies, each of which independently developed doubled die characteristics. On the reverse, a die scratch runs east-southeast from the center right side of the D in UNITED to the lower first S in STATES, and a die scratch runs north-northeast from the upper right of the F in FG. The shared obverse die between WDDR-001 and WDDR-002 creates an interesting die marriage study: collectors who acquire specimens from both varieties can compare the same obverse paired with two distinct reversed dies, each showing its own doubling character and independent marker constellation. Philadelphia struck its 1976 cents without a mint mark from the 95% copper composition standard for the era. No additional cross-reference numbers are known beyond the Wexler designation.
