1976 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1976 1¢ WDDR-001 and submitted by Jennifer Casazza, this doubled die reverse on the 1976 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent shares a die pair with WDDO-003, making specimens struck from this die marriage doubly significant — collectors can examine both obverse and reverse doubling on a single coin. The reverse doubling presents as a spread towards the center along with extra thickness on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the designer's initials FG, and ONE CENT. Nice notching is visible on the upper letters of UNITED and the lower letters of AMERICA and ONE, with the serrated edge profiles characteristic of genuine hub doubling. A spread towards the center indicates the hub shifted slightly inward between impressions, compressing the design elements toward the coin's center and producing the doubled outlines most prominently on letters farthest from the pivot point. The obverse die markers — confirming the shared die pair with WDDO-003 — include a diagonal die scratch inside the O in GOD, a diagonal die scratch above and to the left of the L in LIBERTY, and a die scratch running northeast from the upper right of the B in LIBERTY. The reverse carries its own diagnostics: a die scratch on the roof above the third bay and fourth column, a heavy die scratch running north-northeast from the upper tenth column to the top of the bay, and a die scratch running west-southwest from under the Memorial north of the T in CENT. Additionally, a short vertical die gouge can be found between the centers of the N of IN and the G in GOD on the obverse, a die scratch runs east-southeast from the center right side of the D in UNITED to the lower first S in STATES, and a die scratch runs north-northeast from the upper right of the F in FG.
