Description
The 1976 gold medal Baker-617 was produced by the Medallic Art Company of Danbury, Connecticut for the American Israel Numismatic Association (A.I.N.A.) to mark the American Bicentennial. The gold composition makes this the most valuable medal in the George Washington commemorative series covered here. The Medallic Art Company was America's premier private mint for commemorative medals throughout the twentieth century. Their Bicentennial Washington medal in gold represents the highest tier of commemorative production for the 200th anniversary of American independence. A.I.N.A.-sponsored medals document the intersection of Washington commemoration with the numismatic collecting community, where medals serve both commemorative and collectible purposes. The demand for Washington commemorative pieces was particularly intense during centennial celebrations, with the 1876 Centennial, 1882-1883 evacuation anniversaries, and 1887 Constitutional Centennial generating large numbers of medallic issues.
