Coin Details
Description
This silver medal cataloged as GW-257 is the premium silver striking of the Dickeson's Coin and Medal Safe advertising medal, produced circa 1859. Silver strikings of advertising medals were far less common than copper or bronzed versions, as the precious metal composition significantly increased production costs. Montroville W. Dickeson produced these silver specimens as deluxe presentation pieces for important customers, fellow numismatists, or his own collection. The silver version of GW-257 is substantially rarer than either the copper or bronzed copper versions, reflecting its limited original production. Dickeson's business catered to the growing class of serious American coin collectors in the 1850s, and a silver advertising medal would have conveyed both the quality of his products and the prestige of the numismatic pursuit itself. This piece occupies a unique intersection of Washington commemorative medal, numismatic advertising token, and precious metal collectible.
