1976-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Appearing on the Bicentennial reverse designed by Jack L. Ahr, this 1976-D Washington Quarter WDDR-002 displays spread towards the center on QUARTER DOLLAR, the designer's initials, the lower drum, and the outer fingers of the drummer figure. The Bicentennial reverse, used on all 1975-1976 quarters, replaced the heraldic eagle with a Colonial drummer boy — a design selected through a national competition for America's 200th anniversary. Reverse die markers aid attribution: a die scratch runs northwest from the bottom left of the second S in STATES, and another runs southwest-to-northeast inside the upper R in DOLLAR. These scratch patterns are unique to this die. Attributed by the Wexler Team, this Denver Mint copper-nickel clad issue demonstrates how the drummer design's rich detail — drum sticks, fingers, uniform elements — provides numerous points where hub displacement produces visible doubling.
