Bearing the dual date 1776-1976 and Jack L. Ahr's Colonial Drummer Boy reverse created for the Bicentennial celebration, this Denver Mint Washington Quarter carries a close spread toward the center affecting LLAR of DOLLAR, the designer's initials, ICA of AMERICA, and STA of STATES. The inward displacement suggests the hub shifted slightly toward the die's center during the second impression, pulling the affected letters away from their intended positions. The Wexler Team cataloged this under Wexler Variety ID 1976-D 25¢ WDDR-001 with no known cross-references. Obverse die markers include a light die scratch running north-south between the B and E of LIBERTY, while the reverse carries a die scratch running southwest-to-northeast to the left of the second L in DOLLAR. The Bicentennial Washington Quarter replaced the standard eagle reverse for all quarters dated 1776-1976, and the temporary design created a unique window for doubled die varieties existing only on the Drummer Boy reverse — retired after the Bicentennial program ended.
