Description
This gilt silver medal by Medallic Art Company commemorates the inauguration of Gerald R. Ford as the thirty-eighth President of the United States on August 9, 1974. Ford assumed the presidency upon Richard Nixon's resignation — the only presidential resignation in American history — and declared in his first address that "our long national nightmare is over." The gilt finish, a layer of gold applied over silver, creates a warm golden appearance while maintaining silver's capacity for fine sculptural detail. Ford's inauguration was unprecedented: there was no election campaign, no transition period, no inaugural parade, and no inaugural balls. The simple ceremony in the East Room of the White House before a small audience contrasted sharply with the grand spectacle of traditional inaugurations. Medallic Art Company nonetheless produced a full range of commemorative medals for the occasion, recognizing the historical significance of this unique transfer of power. The gilt silver composition represented a premium presentation format, suitable for distinguished recipients who merited more than bronze but for whom solid gold was impractical. Ford's brief presidency would be defined by the controversial pardon of Nixon, the fall of Saigon, and the challenge of restoring public trust in government after the Watergate scandal.
