(1931) Medal SOM-4 Silver, Charles A. Lindbergh Medallic Art Co., NY
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This silver medal, cataloged as SOM-4 in the Society of Medalists series, depicts aviator Charles A. Lindbergh and was produced circa 1931 by Medallic Art Company of New York. The Society of Medalists was one of the most important artistic medal programs in American history, established in 1930 by the Circle of Friends of the Medallion. The program commissioned leading sculptors to create artistic medals twice yearly, with subscribers receiving each new issue. SOM-4, featuring Lindbergh, commemorates one of the most famous figures of the twentieth century — the pilot who completed the first solo nonstop transatlantic flight from New York to Paris in May 1927. By 1931, Lindbergh was arguably the most famous person on earth, and his selection as the subject for an early Society of Medalists issue reflects his iconic status. The silver composition is the premium version of this issue, as most SOM medals were issued in bronze. Medallic Art Company served as the official manufacturer for the Society of Medalists throughout the program's existence, and these medals represent some of the finest artistic achievements in American medallic art.
