1974-D Typical Die Clash TDC-1C-1974D-03-LD
Error
Description
Cataloged by MadDieClashes as TDC-1c-1974D-02 (LD), this typical die clash variety appears on the 1974-D Large Date Lincoln Memorial cent and presents a moderately strong, unabraded tilted die clash with approximately two degrees of angular offset between the dies at the moment of contact. Unlike TDC-1c-1974D-01, which was abraded by Mint personnel, this die was returned to service without any attempt to remove the clash impressions — meaning the full set of transferred design elements remains visible on the coin. The unabraded condition makes TDC-02 a particularly instructive specimen for studying clash mechanics, as the complete constellation of transferred marks can be mapped against the originating design elements. The most prominent clash features appear on the obverse: a strong impression left by bays 3 and 4 of the Memorial building is visible in Lincoln's portrait area, with the right arm of the letter Y from the reverse extending visibly into bay 3. Bay 9 of the Memorial appears clashed beneath Lincoln's nose, and a small piece of the right arm of the Y is also detectable in bay 3. The back of Lincoln's neck is visible clashed into bay 4, and the back of Lincoln's head appears below the Memorial steps on the reverse. The two-degree tilt of the dies during the clash event means that the contact pressure was not uniformly distributed across the die faces — one side of the die pair experienced stronger contact than the other, producing clash marks of varying intensity across the coin's surface. An overlay analysis provided by MadDieClashes shows the relative position of the dies at the moment of contact, confirming the angular offset. The Large Date designation (LD suffix) identifies this as the variant with proportionally larger date numerals, distinguishing it from any potential Small Date clashed specimens. Collectors attributing specimens to TDC-02 should focus on the bay 3-4 clash marks and the distinctive Y-arm extension as primary diagnostics.
