Description

First documented rim cud for the 1973 Denver Mint Washington Quarter, this variety preserves the raised featureless mass that results when a section of the die rim fractures and the broken piece separates completely. The cavity left by the missing die fragment fills with metal during striking, producing a distinctive raised blob at the coin's edge that obliterates whatever design detail formerly occupied that area. The 1973-D Washington Quarter was struck in copper-nickel clad composition — the standard since 1965 when silver was removed from circulating coinage — and Denver's production volume ensured numerous die pairs were consumed during the year's output. Rim cuds on Washington Quarters occur with moderate frequency, as the coin's size and the forces involved in striking clad planchets subject die rims to considerable mechanical stress over extended runs. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, the -01 designation establishes this as the first entry for the 1973-D date, indicating die rim failures were documented but not in great numbers for this issue. The Washington Quarter design by John Flanagan had been in continuous production since 1932.
