Housed in a Margood Error Coin Holder from a 1970s collection, RCD-1c-1972D-02R carries provenance that connects it directly to the founding era of organized error coin collecting. Arnold Margolis and Mort Goodman — the "Mar" and "Good" behind the Margood name — were pioneers who helped establish error coins as a legitimate numismatic specialty in the 1960s, producing the first dedicated error coin holders and display boards that gave collectors a systematic way to organize and preserve their finds. Both men have since passed away, making original Margood holders artifacts of numismatic history in their own right. The coin itself, cataloged by the Cuds on Coins team on December 31, 2018, is the second retained cud documented for the 1972-D Lincoln Memorial cent, with the "R" suffix confirming the fracture occurred on the reverse die. Like its obverse counterpart RCD-1c-1972D-01, this variety records a die rim that broke completely yet retained the separated fragment in position — the reverse die's broken piece continuing to strike coins from its original seat despite having fully fractured from the die body. No external cross-references have been established for this variety. The combination of a genuinely scarce die state (retained cuds are far less common than standard cuds, since most fragments eject upon separation) with authenticated 1970s-era provenance in a historically significant holder makes RCD-1c-1972D-02R a specimen of dual interest — valued both for its numismatic characteristics and for the collecting history it embodies from the early decades of the error coin hobby.
