1971-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-008
Error
Description
Bearing the same southward directional classification as RPM-007 but originating from a different obverse die, RPM-008 on the 1971-D Lincoln Memorial cent documents a D/D South displacement on an ODV-027 die — the variant without a re-engraved bowtie. Cataloged with die markers UVC-3332 and DMR-011, this variety's three-stage die state record reveals an unusually eventful working life. Stage A at Early Die State, though unconfirmed, represents the die before secondary damage accumulated. Stage B at Early-Mid Die State introduces a constellation of secondary markers across both surfaces: a die clash passes through the lower 1 of the date on the obverse, indicating that the obverse and reverse dies struck each other without a planchet at some point during production, transferring design elements between faces. Numerous die scratches populate the obverse field at this stage, while the reverse shows its own die clash evidence passing through the roof of the Lincoln Memorial, accompanied by additional die scratches distributed across the surface. Stage C at Late Die State, unconfirmed, would document terminal condition. The convergence of a repunched mintmark with die clash evidence on the same die makes RPM-008 a dual-phenomenon variety — the RPM resulted from the original die preparation process, while the die clash occurred during active production, and both are permanently recorded on every coin struck from this die. The EMDS die clash through the date and Memorial roof gives collectors two independent attribution pathways beyond the mintmark repunching itself, making this one of the more readily identifiable varieties in the 1971-D RPM sequence.
