1971-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002
Error
Description
Second in the VarietyVista repunched mintmark sequence for the 1971-D Lincoln Memorial cent, RPM-002 documents a tilted mintmark displacement — D/D Tilted — on an obverse die classified as ODV-028, the variant with a re-engraved bowtie on Lincoln's portrait. This re-engraved tie serves as a visible macro marker distinguishing ODV-028 dies from the unmodified ODV-027 dies used by other 1971-D RPM varieties. Cataloged with die markers UVC-947 and DMR-003, this variety's three die stages reveal an unusually rich progression of secondary die markers. Stage A at Early Die State presents not only the tilted repunched mintmark but also a die gouge near the rim north of the L in LIBERTY and another beneath the N of ONE on the reverse — two attribution markers established from the die's earliest production. By Stage B at Mid Die State, the die has accumulated additional diagnostics: scratches running northeast through the date, plus a die break spanning columns eleven and twelve of the Memorial on the reverse, signaling significant structural fatigue. Stage C at Late Die State documents terminal die condition. The density of die markers across RPM-002's three stages makes it one of the more readily attributable 1971-D RPM varieties — collectors can confirm the variety through the re-engraved tie (ODV-028), the specific die gouges, the date-area scratches, and the column die break, each providing independent verification layers beyond the tilted mintmark repunching itself.
