Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1970-S 5¢ Pr WRPM-006, this proof Jefferson Nickel from San Francisco displays S/S North on a proof striking — noteworthy given the enhanced quality control applied to proof dies. Cross-referenced as None known. Die markers: Obverse: None significant. Reverse: A die scratch runs NNE from the top left of the small left window; die scratches run SW/NE between the lower 4th column and the long right window. Proof dies produce mirror-like fields that can make mintmark details more visible than on business strikes. Composed of 75% copper, 25% nickel (5.0 g, 21.21 mm), RPMs on proof coins document the manual S punch application that occurred even on proof dies before the Mint's 1990 transition to master die-integrated mintmarks.
