1970-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-010

Description

Returning to cardinal-direction displacement, the 1970-S proof Jefferson Nickel RPM-010 shows S/S East repunching with the corrective second punch shifting the mintmark eastward from its initial western placement. Cataloged as UVC-552 and DMR-012, this is the fifth of six RPM varieties documented for the prolific 1970-S proof nickel date. Die stage records place Stage A with both obverse and reverse in early die state, and Stages B and C unconfirmed at mid-die state and late die state respectively. The coexistence of both eastward and tilted RPMs on the same date reflects the varied nature of hand-punching errors — some die setters simply missed the mark laterally while others introduced rotational misalignment. Regardless of direction, the correction process was identical: a second, properly positioned blow from the mintmark punch, with the original impression left permanently embedded in the die steel because polishing away a full mintmark impression would have risked damaging surrounding design elements. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel, the 1970-S proof nickel continues Felix Schlag's design that had served the denomination since 1938.
