Description

Bearing UVC-483 and DMR-008 catalog numbers, the 1970-S proof Jefferson Nickel RPM-006 returns to the eastward displacement pattern with an S/S East direction. The first S landed too far west, and the die setter's corrective second punch shifted the mintmark to its final eastern position, leaving remnants of the original impression visible on the western side. Stage A documents both obverse and reverse in early die state, while Stages B and C remain unconfirmed at mid-die state and late die state. The 1970-S proof nickel date produced a remarkable six distinct RPM varieties — a concentration that underscores how frequently hand-punching errors occurred during the San Francisco Mint's proof production runs. Each proof die was individually prepared and inspected, yet the inherent imprecision of manually positioning a steel punch against hardened die steel meant that subtle misplacements regularly escaped the quality control process. Felix Schlag's Jefferson portrait and Monticello reverse, rendered on the 75% copper and 25% nickel planchet, received multiple proof strikes to produce the sharp detail and mirror finish that define this format.
