Description

Unlike the doubled die varieties that dominate the 1970 Lincoln Memorial cent error landscape, MST 001 represents a fundamentally different class of numismatic anomaly — a multi-struck coin produced when the planchet failed to eject properly from the coining press after receiving its initial impression and was struck a second time by the dies. Multi-strikes are striking errors rather than die varieties: the die itself is perfectly normal, but the mechanical process of feeding blanks, striking, and ejecting went wrong, subjecting this particular coin to multiple impacts from the same die pair. The visual result depends on whether the coin remained centered between strikes or shifted position: a fully centered multi-strike produces an unusually sharp, almost proof-like impression with slightly different characteristics than a normal strike, while an offset multi-strike displays two partially overlapping sets of design elements — the most visually dramatic manifestation. Multi-struck 1970 Lincoln Memorial cents are considerably scarcer than the date's many doubled die varieties because striking errors are random mechanical events affecting individual coins, whereas die varieties reproduce across every coin struck from the affected die. MST 001 carries the designation as the first cataloged multi-strike for this date, and its existence documents that the Philadelphia Mint's high-speed coining presses occasionally experienced ejection failures during the 1970 production run — a mechanical inevitability given the millions of cents produced.
