Description

Submitted by Jennifer Casazza and cross-referenced as CONECA 3-R-II under Wexler Variety ID 1969-S 50¢ Pr WDDR-004, this San Francisco proof Kennedy half dollar carries a Class II tripled reverse with spread toward the center. Tripling appears on USA, HALF DOLLAR, all stars in the eagle circle, all stars above E PLURIBUS UNUM, and slightly on four stars behind the eagle's head. The spread is strongest at 12 o'clock and weakest at 6, confirming a pivot-style hub displacement. No obverse markers have been noted. Reverse Stage A shows a light gouge southwest from the rim over R in AMERICA and a small gouge in the feathers left of E in EPU. Stage B adds a gouge under the second T in STATES, vertical gouges above the first L in DOLLAR, and a scratch west-northwest from the D in UNITED. As a proof issue struck on polished planchets, the tripled impressions may be more visible than on a business strike. Reverse: Die gouge under top left second T of STATES. Short vertical die gouges above bottom of first L in DOLLAR. Die scratch WNW from upper left D of UNITED.Submitted By: Jennifer CasazzaCross References: CONECA: 3-R-II Obverse: None noted. Reverse: Light die gouge SW from rim over R in AMERICA. Small die gouge in feathers to left of E in EPU.
