Coin Details
Description
Swoger catalog number D1969-1a. This 76mm matte silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the founding of San Diego, California. San Diego was established on July 16, 1769, when Padre Junipero Serra founded Mission San Diego de Alcala, the first of California's twenty-one Franciscan missions. The Portola Expedition, led by Captain Gaspar de Portola, had arrived at San Diego Bay earlier that year, establishing the Presidio of San Diego as Spain's first permanent settlement on the Pacific coast of what is now the United States. The matte silver finish and 76mm diameter make this the premium large-format issue in the D1969-1 series. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.
Rarity Notes
