Coin Details
Description
Swoger catalog number D1969-1d. This standard-size bronze medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the 200th anniversary of San Diego's founding. The small-format bronze medal offered the most affordable option for collectors and the public wishing to own a memento of San Diego's bicentennial. The city was founded in 1769 when Spanish colonists established Mission San Diego de Alcala and the Presidio of San Diego, creating the first European settlement on the Pacific coast of the future United States. The settlement grew slowly under Spanish and Mexican rule before American acquisition following the Mexican-American War in 1848. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This is the small bronze issue in the extensive D1969-1 San Diego series.
Rarity Notes
Standard-size bronze medal — the most affordable and widely distributed variant in the San Diego series. Exact mintage not separately reported.
