1969-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003
Error
Description
Cataloged as RPM-003 for the 1969-D Lincoln Memorial cent by VarietyVista with UVC-923 and DMR-004, this repunched mint mark variety follows a similar weakening pattern to RPM-001 but with its own distinct die markers and progression timeline. Stage A displays a strong secondary mintmark with the obverse in EDS and the reverse also in EDS, representing the freshest condition in which the repunching is most readily visible. Stage B shows a medium secondary mintmark in mid die state with numerous fine die scratches appearing on both sides (MDS), the fine scratches serving as a secondary attribution marker for specimens where the repunching is ambiguous. Stage C reaches LDS but remains unconfirmed, meaning no specimen in this advanced state of wear has yet been photographically documented to the attribution service's verification standards. The three-stage weakening from strong through medium to presumably faint secondary mintmark is characteristic of RPM varieties generally: because the secondary mint mark impression was applied with less force or at a less favorable angle than the primary, it sits at a shallower depth in the die steel and is therefore the first feature to succumb to die wear. The 1969-D cent was struck at the Denver Mint during the last full year of the hand-punched mint mark era for this denomination. Struck on a 3.11-gram, 19mm planchet of 95% copper and 5% zinc.
