Designated RCD-1c-1969D-01 by Cuds on Coins and first published on May 1, 2019, this retained cud variety on the 1969-D Lincoln Memorial cent documents a die fragment that has broken free along its crack boundary yet remains captured within the die assembly — held in place by neighboring die steel or the collar — rather than falling away entirely. The result on struck coins is a raised, slightly displaced area that retains partial design detail, distinguishing it from a full cud (which obliterates design completely) and from a pre-cud (where the fragment has cracked but not yet separated). Retained cuds are transitional: the die might continue striking dozens or hundreds of additional coins in this condition before the fragment finally dislodges, making retained cud specimens scarcer than either the preceding pre-cud stage or the subsequent full-cud stage for the same die.
