Description

Attributed as RPM-011 for the 1969-D Lincoln Memorial cent by VarietyVista with UVC-1156 and DMR-012, this variety carries the notation D/D Rotated CW, indicating that the D mint mark was punched twice with the second impression rotated clockwise relative to the first. The clockwise rotation produces a distinctive doubled image where the secondary D appears tilted in the opposite direction from the counterclockwise rotation documented on RPM-008 — together, these two rotated RPMs for the 1969-D date demonstrate that die preparers occasionally introduced angular misalignment in both directions during the hand-punching process. Three die stages are documented: Stage A is cataloged as EDS but remains unconfirmed; Stage B shows a small die gouge next to the rim north of the date in early-mid die state (EMDS), with a die clash visible above the statue on the reverse in LMDS — the reverse's advanced state suggesting this obverse was paired with an aging reverse die; Stage C reaches LDS but awaits confirmation. The die clash above the statue in Stage B provides a useful secondary attribution marker, and the combination of a rotated RPM with a clashed die creates a dual-interest variety that appeals to both RPM and die clash specialists. Struck at the Denver Mint on a 3.11-gram, 19mm planchet of 95% copper and 5% zinc.
