Description

Documented by VarietyVista under die marker codes UVC-128 and DMR-005, the 1968-D DDR-001 Kennedy Half Dollar exhibits a strong spread on the stars under and letters of STATES OF AMERICA, with light spread extending to the stars under and letters of UNITED and DOLLAR — a graduated doubling intensity where the hub displacement affected the central reverse inscription area most dramatically while producing progressively weaker effects toward the peripheral lettering. This intensity gradient maps the geometry of the hub displacement vector across the die face, revealing that the secondary impression shifted most significantly in the zone occupied by STATES OF AMERICA. Three die states are documented: Stage A where both reverse and obverse are in early-mid die state (EMDS), Stage B with both in MDS, and Stage C where both reach late die state (LDS). The consistent parallel aging of both dies through all three stages suggests this die pair remained married throughout their entire service life — they were installed together and retired together without being separated and repaired with different partner dies. The Kennedy Half Dollar was designed by Gilroy Roberts for the obverse and Frank Gasparro for the reverse, struck at the Denver Mint in 1968 in 40% silver clad composition at 11.50 grams with a 30.6 mm diameter. The 1968-D was the first Denver Mint Kennedy Half Dollar struck after the composition change from 90% silver to 40% silver, marking a significant transition in the series.
