1967 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Dating from the 1965-1967 period when Congress removed mint marks from all United States coinage, this Wexler-attributed Washington Quarter WDDR-002 carries no mint mark regardless of which facility struck it. A strong clockwise spread from a pivot at approximately 8:00 affects USA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, QUARTER DOLLAR, and the lower branches and leaves of the heraldic eagle's olive branch and arrows. The 8:00 pivot produces a rotational pattern where elements opposite the lower-left quadrant receive the greatest displacement. The strong intensity means doubling should be identifiable under moderate magnification. No significant die markers have been noted beyond the doubling itself. The 1967 quarter is copper-nickel clad, part of the new standard introduced in 1965 to replace 90% silver composition. John Flanagan's Washington portrait and heraldic eagle reverse appear on this transitional-era coin. Examine USA and QUARTER DOLLAR for the strongest clockwise spread, then trace the displacement through the lower branches and leaves.
