Description

Eighteenth in the reverse doubled die census for the 1967 Kennedy half dollar, DDR-018 registers light triple spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the stars positioned beneath those letters, and the stars nestled between the heraldic eagle's rays on Frank Gasparro's reverse design. Triple spread — where three distinct hub impressions are detectable rather than the standard two — indicates the die received at least three separate hubbing passes with measurable misalignment between each, a relatively uncommon occurrence that creates layered diagnostics more complex than typical single-direction doubling. Kennedy half dollars struck in 1967 were produced in the 40% silver-clad composition mandated by the Coinage Act of 1965, and no mintmarks appeared on any 1967-dated coinage as part of the Mint's temporary suspension during the nationwide coin shortage.
