Description

Eighteenth in the reverse doubled die census for the 1967 Kennedy half dollar, DDR-018 registers light triple spread on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the stars positioned beneath those letters, and the stars nestled between the heraldic eagle's rays on Frank Gasparro's reverse design. Triple spread — where three distinct hub impressions are detectable rather than the standard two — indicates the die received at least three separate hubbing passes with measurable misalignment between each, a relatively uncommon occurrence that creates layered diagnostics more complex than typical single-direction doubling. Kennedy half dollars struck in 1967 were produced in the 40% silver-clad composition mandated by the Coinage Act of 1965, and no mintmarks appeared on any 1967-dated coinage as part of the Mint's temporary suspension during the nationwide coin shortage. VarietyVista assigned die identifiers UVC-565 and DMR-037, documenting three die stages: Stage A where both reverse and obverse surfaces exhibit early die state characteristics, Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The EDS confirmation for Stage A ensures specimens with fresh, unworn die surfaces have been verified. The "BS" comment likely refers to an internal VarietyVista classification code related to the business strike designation. Gilroy Roberts' obverse portrait of President Kennedy pairs with Gasparro's eagle reverse, where the stars and lettering around the rim provide numerous diagnostic checkpoints for the triple spread. Collectors should examine the star points under 10-15x magnification, where triple impressions create a fan-like separation pattern more easily detectable than on the broader letter strokes of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
