1967 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-017

Description

Struck during the year the U.S. Mint removed mint marks from all coinage due to the ongoing coin shortage, DDR-017 on the 1967 Kennedy Half Dollar shows medium spread on the stars under the letters of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with the spread increasing from left to right across the legend. This progressive spread pattern is characteristic of a rotational or tilted hub misalignment. Die markers are cataloged as UVC-546 and DMR-036, with three die stages documented: Stage A showing reverse EDS with numerous north-south die scratches on the obverse in EDS, Stage B in MDS (unconfirmed), and Stage C in LDS (unconfirmed). Philadelphia Mint regular strike. The 1967 Kennedy Half Dollar was produced in the 40% silver-clad composition adopted in 1965, and the absence of mint marks on 1965-1967 coinage means all production cannot be attributed to a specific facility, though Philadelphia handled the bulk of half dollar output during this period.
