Description

Bearing classification codes UVC-475 and DMR-032 within the VarietyVista attribution system, this fifteenth doubled die reverse for the 1967 Kennedy Half Dollar displays strong spread on STATES OF AMERICA and all the stars in the circle, with medium spread visible on the stars positioned between the rays of the heraldic eagle reverse. Three die states have been confirmed for this variety: Stage A represents an early die state that remains unconfirmed pending additional specimen documentation, Stage B is characterized by strong die scratches running through AMERICA with the obverse showing early-to-mid die state characteristics, and Stage C captures the late die state condition that also awaits confirmed specimens. The 1967 Kennedy Half Dollar was struck in the 40% silver clad composition adopted in 1965 when the Coinage Act eliminated 90% silver from circulating coinage — a transitional alloy consisting of outer layers of 80% silver bonded to a core of 21% silver that represented the government's effort to conserve silver reserves while maintaining some precious metal content. Notably, 1967 saw no mintmarks on any United States coinage as part of the Mint's response to the coin shortage crisis, and all production occurred at Philadelphia regardless of which facility actually struck the coins. As a business strike variety (indicated by the "BS" notation), DDR-015 can be found in circulation sets and original bank-wrapped rolls from the period. The strong spread on the legend and stars makes this one of the more visually dramatic doubled die reverses among the prolific 1967 Kennedy Half Dollar die variety population.
