1967 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-010
Error
Description
Produced during the unique no-mintmark period of 1965–1967 — when the Treasury eliminated mint marks from all coins to discourage hoarding of branch-mint issues — this Kennedy Half Dollar doubled die reverse exhibits strong spread across multiple design elements. The doubling appears on the stars under UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, stars between the rays, stars behind the head, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and the lower letters of AMERICA, making DDR-010 one of the more dramatically affected varieties in the Kennedy Half series. VarietyVista cataloged this as a business strike under UVC-123 and DMR-018, with die state documentation recording Stage A in Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B where both reverse and obverse are at Mid Die State, and Stage C where both reach Late Die State. The 1967 Kennedy Half was struck in 40% silver — a reduced composition adopted after the Coinage Act of 1965 lowered the silver content from the original 90% used in 1964. Without mint marks, all three operating facilities — Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco — produced coins indistinguishable by origin, a policy that lasted through 1967.
