1967 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-005
Error
Description
Cataloged as DDR-005 by VarietyVista, this 1967 Kennedy half dollar doubled die reverse exhibits a light spread on all letters and stars around the rim in a clockwise arc from the approximately 10 o'clock to 5 o'clock positions, with additional doubling visible on the stars between the heraldic eagle's rays. The 1967 half dollar is a silver-clad issue containing 40% silver, composed of outer layers of 80% silver and 20% copper bonded to a core of 20.9% silver, weighing 11.5 grams with a 30.6 mm diameter. This transitional composition was used exclusively from 1965 to 1970, making silver-clad Kennedy halves a distinct collecting subset. Tracked under Universal Variety Code UVC-119 and Die Marker Reference DMR-014, the die progresses through three documented states: Stage A where both reverse and obverse are at early die state; Stage B where both are at mid die state; and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The 1967 Kennedy half dollar bears no mintmark despite being produced at both Philadelphia and Denver, as mintmarks were omitted from all U.S. coins from 1965 to 1967 as part of the Coinage Act of 1965's measures to discourage coin hoarding during the silver transition. Gilroy Roberts designed the obverse portrait of President John F. Kennedy, while Frank Gasparro created the heraldic eagle reverse. This variety is part of the Kennedy Half Dollars Silver Clad 1965-1970 series and was attributed by VarietyVista.
