1967 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-012
Error
Description
Found on a Special Mint Set Jefferson Nickel from the 1965–1967 period when neither proof nor standard business strikes carried mint-quality distinctions, this Class II distorted hub doubling shows a very close spread on OF E PLURIBUS UNUM, increasing from left to right. The coin examined was in a late die state. Attributed by Ben Peters under Wexler Variety ID: 1967 WDDR-012 SMS, the SMS designation is critical — Special Mint Set coins occupied a quality tier between business strikes and proofs during the three years when proof production was suspended. Obverse die markers include a short almost horizontal die crack on top of Jefferson’s head, a die dot on his forehead, and a die crack above the designer’s initials FS. Reverse die markers feature a die dot to the lower right of the M of UNUM and two short die gouges above the center crossbar of the E of E PLURIBUS UNUM. The 1967 SMS Jefferson Nickel is a transitional-era collectible, and doubled die varieties on SMS coins carry added interest because of the limited window during which this striking format was employed.
