1967 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-010
Error
Description
Struck as a Special Mint Set (SMS) coin, this 1967 Jefferson Nickel WDDR-010 exhibits Class II distorted hub doubling with a very close spread on the reverse. The 1965-1967 period saw no proof coinage produced; instead, the U.S. Mint issued SMS coins with a finish quality between business strikes and proofs. SMS varieties occupy a distinctive niche in the Jefferson Nickel series as they represent the only non-proof, non-business-strike format produced during this transitional era. The Class II distorted hub mechanism produces spread that typically increases in one direction across the die face. The very close spread designation indicates the doubled image sits tightly against the primary design, requiring careful examination under higher magnification to distinguish from die deterioration or strike characteristics on the SMS finish surface. Die Markers: Obverse: Die gouge (dot) to left of center portion of first T of TRUST. Reverse: Die gouge (dot) to upper left of P of PLURIBUS; die gouge between upper portions of R and I of PLURIBUS; die gouge just to upper right of center bar of E of UNITED.
