1967 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

Exhibiting Class II distorted hub doubling, the 1967 Jefferson Nickel WDDR-004 shows doubling on STATES OF AMERICA that increases in intensity from left to right — a progressive spread pattern characteristic of hub doubling where the pivot point lies to the left of the affected area, amplifying displacement on the rightward elements. Die markers establish attribution diagnostics: on the obverse, a series of die cracks appear at the top of Jefferson's head, indicating the obverse die was developing stress fractures during production. On the reverse, a die gouge sits to the upper right of the E of MONTICELLO, with a short die gouge also visible to the lower left of the O of OF. The die cracks on the obverse suggest this die pair was in a later stage of its production life when the most commonly encountered examples were struck. Four documented DDRs for the 1967 date reflects active variety research on this mintmark-free issue. The 1967 nickel was produced during the period (1965-1967) when Congress removed mintmarks from all United States coins to discourage speculative hoarding during the mid-1960s coin shortage. Without mintmarks, all 1967 nickels share a uniform appearance regardless of production facility, concentrating variety research on die-specific characteristics rather than mint attribution.
