Description

Recorded as CU-1C-1966-15 and designated as a rim cud, this fifteenth cud variety for the 1966 Lincoln cent is the second of three rim cuds among the documented 1966 varieties. The distinction between a rim cud and a larger cud that extends into the field or devices is primarily one of scale: both originate from the same die failure mechanism — a fracture at the die's periphery that separates a fragment of the rim — but a rim cud involves a smaller fracture that removes only the outermost edge of the die without significantly intruding on the adjacent design elements. On the finished coin, a rim cud appears as a smooth raised bump along the rim that may be visible to the unaided eye on well-preserved specimens but typically requires 5x to 10x magnification for confident identification on circulated coins. The subtlety of small rim cuds makes them among the more easily overlooked varieties in circulation, and many undocumented examples likely exist in unchecked rolls and accumulations of 1966 cents. The 1966 cent was produced at the Philadelphia Mint during the Coinage Act of 1965 era, when all mint marks were removed from U.S. coins.
