1964-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-004
Error
Description
Early in the RPM catalog sequence for the 1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar, RPM-004 shows a D/D North displacement that distinguishes it from the more common eastward-shifted examples documented for this date. The northward displacement means the initial mintmark punch landed lower than intended, and the corrective second blow repositioned the D upward to its proper location, leaving traces of the first impression below the final position. Paired with RDV-001, the "Straight G" reverse die variety, RPM-004 belongs to the straight-serif group that accounts for roughly half of the documented 1964-D Kennedy die varieties. As the fourth documented RPM for the date, this variety was among the earlier discoveries in what would eventually grow to a catalog of ten or more RPMs — a depth of documentation that reflects the coin's popularity and the number of specimens available for examination. The 1964-D Kennedy Half Dollar's 90% silver composition, memorial significance, and massive mintage of 156,205,446 coins created the perfect conditions for variety discovery: public interest drove massive saving, ensuring millions of specimens survived in high grade, and the numismatic community's emotional connection to the Kennedy coin motivated thorough study. The D/D North direction provides a collecting contrast to the eastward RPMs that dominate the series, and collectors pursuing directional variety within the 1964-D RPM group specifically seek out North and South examples to complement the more readily available East varieties. Authentication of the northward shift requires careful comparison of the mintmark's lower serifs against reference images.
