Description
The 1964 SMS Kennedy Half Dollar is a Special Mint Set (SMS) half dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the Kennedy Half Dollars Silver 1964 to Date series. The U.S. Mint produced 4.0 million examples, making this the lowest mintage among 6 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features John F. Kennedy facing left, based on the presidential medal by Gilroy Roberts and the reverse displays the Presidential Seal — a heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows. Rushed into production weeks after President Kennedy's assassination. Both Philadelphia and Denver struck massive quantities that were immediately hoarded. This Special Mint Set (SMS) coin was produced from 1965 to 1967 as a substitute for proof coins during the transition from silver to clad coinage, featuring a distinctive satin-like finish between business strike and proof quality. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 12.5 grams, 31 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #39971.
