1964 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006
Error
Description
Representing the last year of 90% silver proof Washington Quarters, this 1964 WDDR-006 was attributed by the Wexler Team as a dual variety that also carries the WDDO-005 obverse designation, confirming hub doubling on both sides. The 1964 proof quarter holds a unique position as the last year of 90% silver composition before the switch to copper-nickel clad in 1965. Die markers documented for the die marriage provide additional attribution confirmation. Dual varieties are relatively uncommon because they require both dies in a pair to have received multiple hub impressions with positional variation — an intersection of two independent manufacturing anomalies. John Flanagan's Washington Quarter design in its final silver proof incarnation gives this variety both precious metal appeal and mechanical variety interest. The 1964 proof sets were produced in extraordinary quantities as collectors anticipated the coming compositional change, yet dual-variety specimens remain scarce relative to the total population, rewarding patient searchers who examine both sides of every coin. A close spread towards the rim shows on LIBERTY. Two short vertical die gouges can be found between the upper I and B in LIBERTY. Reverse: A die gouge can be found between the bottom of the second S in STATES and the O in OF.
