1964-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

Opposite in repunching direction to the two northward RPMs for this date, the 1964-D Washington Quarter RPM-004 shows a D over D repunched to the south — remnants of the initial mintmark impression appear above the final D position, displaced northward from the corrective southward second punch. The southward direction indicates the die maker's first D punch landed too high and required downward correction, contrasting with the RPM-001 and RPM-002 varieties where the correction moved northward. Having RPMs in both directions on the same date illustrates the randomness of individual mintmark placement — each die received its D independently, and the direction of correction depended entirely on where the first punch happened to land relative to the desired position. The 1964-D holds distinction as the final silver quarter from Denver, making all four of its cataloged RPMs (001, 002, 004, 005) the last repunched silver quarter mintmarks produced at this facility. Struck on 90% silver at 24.3mm in the final year of the silver quarter era. Flanagan's Washington Quarter design was completing its thirty-third year in precious metal.
