1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-014

Description

The 1964-D Roosevelt Dime WDDR-014 displays doubling on the left side of the torch design: a spread to the east is visible on the left side flame and on the left upper torch holder. The Wexler Variety ID is 1964-D 10¢ WDDR-014. The 1964-D is historically significant as the last year the Roosevelt Dime was struck in 90% silver before the Coinage Act of 1965 transitioned the denomination to a copper-nickel clad composition. This places every 1964-D die variety, including this doubled die reverse, within a single-year window that closes the silver Roosevelt Dime era. Die markers on both sides assist with attribution. On the obverse, a die chip is present in the field to the right of the upper opening of the E in LIBERTY. On the reverse, a north-northwest to south-southeast die scratch appears to the right of the right dot when viewed from UNUM. A light die scratch runs south from the right lower olive leaf and continues through the left side of the B in PLURIBUS. The torch flame doubling is the primary visual diagnostic and is best examined under low-power magnification with raking light to maximize the contrast between primary and doubled elements.
