1964-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-011

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, WDDR-011 on the 1964-D Roosevelt Dime shows a counterclockwise spread from a pivot point at approximately 8:00 visible on OF AMERICA and the right dot flanking the denomination. A die clash at the nose area provides an additional diagnostic marker for attribution. The 1964-D holds landmark status as the last 90% silver Roosevelt Dime — the Coinage Act of 1965 transitioned the denomination to copper-nickel clad, ending nearly two decades of silver dime production that began with the series launch in 1946. Denver struck enormous quantities of 1964-D dimes as the Mint attempted to alleviate the severe coin shortage, and the massive production employed many die pairs, each carrying the potential for hub doubling during the die manufacturing process. Eleven documented doubled die reverses for 1964-D reflects both the high die count and the collector interest in terminal silver-year varieties. John R. Sinnock's torch-and-branches reverse design shows the counterclockwise rotation most clearly around the peripheral lettering. Die Markers: Obverse: Die scratch NNE from the top center of the 6 in the date. Die scratches NW from the profile to LIBERTY. Reverse: Die scratch NNW from the left side of the first U in UNUM through the second dot at EPU, through the lower acorn and to the torch holder. Series of die scratches NE from the right side of the top oak leaf to the E in AMERICA.
