1964-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-017

Description

While the doubling itself is very light — confined to AMERICA on the reverse — DDR-017 of the 1964-D Roosevelt Dime compensates with a dramatic display of progressive die deterioration documented across its die stages. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-473 (DMR-021), Stage B records three separate die cracks: one running from the right stem through the I of DIME to the rim, another from the torch bottom to the M of DIME, and a third spanning rim to rim from the K-12 position (12 o'clock) to K-1:30. This constellation of cracking traces the die's decline from serviceable tool to failing steel, with the rim-to-rim crack indicating advanced structural fatigue. The obverse is identified as ODV-011 with its diagnostic blunt 9 in the date — the same obverse die pairing found on DDR-009 Stage B, placing both varieties within the same family of 1964-D reverse dies. As the last year of silver dime production, the 1964-D saw enormous output at the Denver Mint to meet hoarding-driven demand, pushing dies to their limits and generating the extensive cracking that makes DDR-017's later stages so visually compelling despite the subtle primary doubling.
