1964-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-455 and DMR-003 and cross-referenced as FS-801 (Fivaz-Stanton 18.5) in the Cherrypickers' Guide, this 1964-D Roosevelt Silver Dime DDR-001 displays medium spread on all lettering around the rim — a comprehensive doubling pattern affecting UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DIME, and E PLURIBUS UNUM simultaneously, indicating a hub displacement that was consistent enough in magnitude and direction to produce visible doubling across the full circumference of reverse inscriptions. The obverse is identified as ODV-011, known as the "Blunt 9" obverse die variety, adding a second attribution dimension to this die pairing. Four documented die stages chronicle the die's extensive service life: Stage A is early die state (EDS, unconfirmed); Stage B shows a die clash through the olive branch at MDS with the obverse also at MDS; Stage C brings both reverse and obverse to LDS; and Stage D, at very late die state (VLDS), develops a die crack from the right side of the O in ONE extending to the rim, followed by another crack from the lower right of the O in OF running to the rim — progressive structural failures documenting the die's final production phase. The Roosevelt Silver Dime was designed by John R. Sinnock, struck at the Denver Mint in 1964 as the final year of 90% silver dime production, weighing 2.50 grams with a 17.9 mm diameter. The FS-801 cross-reference in the Cherrypickers' Guide confirms this as a significant variety actively sought by collectors examining 1964-D dime rolls and collections. The four-stage progression from fresh die through clash event to terminal cracking provides a complete biographical record of this working die's service.
