Description

Documented by Cuds on Coins on September 1, 2013, this 1964-D Jefferson nickel rim cud represents a major die break where a fragment of the die's edge separated entirely, leaving a void in the die face that produced a raised, featureless blob of metal at the coin's rim upon striking. Unlike retained interior die breaks where the broken piece remains partially attached, a rim cud involves complete detachment of a peripheral die section, resulting in an unmistakable raised mass with no design detail. The cud occupies the reverse rim area, designated 01R in the Cuds on Coins cataloging system, where the R suffix indicates the reverse position. No cross-reference numbers from other cataloging systems have been assigned to this variety. The 1964-D Jefferson nickel holds the distinction of having the highest mintage in the entire Jefferson series at 1.787 billion pieces, as the Treasury ramped up production ahead of the transition from silver to clad coinage. Despite that massive production volume, documented cuds remain scarce relative to the total population because quality control protocols typically flagged and removed severely damaged dies. The size and location of the cud blob serve as the primary attribution diagnostics, as each break pattern is unique to its specific die.
