Description

Second in the Wexler Team's catalog of repunched mintmarks for the 1964-D Jefferson Nickel, WRPM-002 documents one of multiple working dies where the D mintmark required repositioning after the initial hand-punch attempt. The year 1964 was extraordinary in American coinage history — a nationwide coin shortage driven by silver hoarding prompted Congress to authorize massive production runs and ultimately led to the Coinage Act of 1965, which eliminated silver from dimes and quarters. Denver's response was unprecedented output, with Jefferson Nickel production reaching levels that demanded hundreds of working dies, each needing its own individually hand-punched D mintmark beside Monticello. This volume of die preparation virtually guaranteed that some percentage would show repunching evidence, and the deep RPM census for 1964-D reflects that reality. Each working die received its mintmark from an engraver who positioned a steel punch and struck it with a mallet, and when the initial placement was unsatisfactory, a corrective second blow left traces of both positions. WRPM-002's early catalog position suggests visible repunching accessible to collectors with moderate magnification.
