Cataloged by VarietyVista with codes UVC-459 and DMR-007, this 1964-D Jefferson Nickel features a D/D repunched mintmark displaced to the east. The 1964-D holds special significance as the final year of regular pre-clad coinage, the last date before the Coinage Act of 1965 transformed U.S. coin production. Die progression begins at Stage A in early mid-die state (EMDS), progressing through subsequent stages. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at Denver, the 1964-D was produced in enormous quantities as the Mint raced to fill circulation demands before the transition to clad coinage — Denver struck over a billion nickels in 1964, an extraordinary output that generated hundreds of die pairs. RPM-006 is the sixth documented repunched mintmark, and the eastward displacement indicates the first D punch landed west of its intended position. The massive 1964 production run represents the final large-scale application of hand-punched mint marks on Jefferson Nickels before the Mint eventually incorporated mint marks into master dies, eliminating the source of repunched mintmark varieties.
