1964-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

RPM-004 on the 1964 (D) Jefferson Nickel shows the D mintmark punched over a previous D to the East (D/D East), attributed by VarietyVista. Die markers: UVC-430 and DMR-005. Stage A is early die state (unconfirmed). The secondary D impression to the east of the primary punch is visible under magnification as a displaced serif and curve structure consistent with the D/D East direction. The 1964 Jefferson Nickel was struck at Denver in standard copper-nickel composition — the same alloy used since 1946 after the wartime silver nickel program ended. The Denver Mint produced very large quantities of Jefferson Nickels in 1964 as pre-clad-era production ramped up, and hand-punched mintmarks on the high-volume production dies created conditions for repunchings across multiple positions. RPM-004's D/D East direction distinguishes it from other 1964-D RPM attributions in the VarietyVista census, and the UVC-430 and DMR-005 markers provide die-specific confirmation.
