1963 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-018
Error
Description
Proof-struck at Philadelphia, DDR-018 for the 1963 Roosevelt Dime exhibits light spread on ONE, UNI of UNITED appearing as notched corners, the left stem, and E PLU of PLURIBUS. The notched corner effect on UNI is a distinctive identification feature: rather than a smooth doubled outline, the secondary hub impression created angular steps at each letter's corners, producing a notched appearance under magnification. Notched corners result from a very close spread where the secondary impression overlaps most of the primary but shifts just enough to create stepped edges at the sharpest angles of each letter. Die markers under UVC-418 and DMR-025 document three stages: Stage A is early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B is mid-die-state (unconfirmed), and Stage C is late die state (unconfirmed). Roosevelt Dimes from 1963 were among the final proof issues struck in 90% silver before the composition change in 1965, and mirror fields make the notched-corner doubling more visible than on a business strike. Collectors should examine UNI of UNITED for notched corners and verify spread on ONE, the left stem, and E PLU.
